Preventing Cavities in Kids

Your baby’s teeth are precious. As such, making sure to tend and care for them should be among the top activities in your parenting list of priorities.

A cavity during childhood can result in early fallouts. Should this happen after the onset of the second set of teeth, the resulting gaps may not be replaceable naturally since the teeth won’t sprout again.

Also, if the cavity is not prevented, it can cause a severe degree of pain and even aggravate risks to secondary infections and gum diseases.

Help protect your kid from some uncomfortable dental procedures, which can be costly, by adopting these three measures:

  • Limit sweets

Sugary treats are definitely your child’s most favourite. As such, it’s tempting to give these delicacies to your child when looking to trick or soothe them to sleep or calm down.

Some parents also use sweets as rewards whenever the child does something commendable.

Unfortunately, snacking on candies only helps cavity-causing bacteria in the mouth to thrive by providing an ideal environment for growth and nutrients they require.

Limiting snacks and sweets in your child’s diet is a significant effort to minimize risks to cavities, foul odour, and teeth decay by almost 50%.

Cut down fruit juices and soda from your child’s diet and consider replacing them with water if necessary. If you’ve got a carton of biscuits in the queue, consign it to the bin or give it away.

  • Practice good dental hygiene

Excellent dental hygiene is the only first-hand guard against tooth cavities. By imparting good dental hygiene to your child at a tender age, no doubt that the teeth will keep their shape and whitish hue right to the adult stage.

Showing your child how to brush with pea-sized fluoride toothpaste and a soft brush is an excellent way to begin.

A child-size brush is your perfect bet when looking to keep the learning curve as easier as possible since it will balance effortlessly on your kid’s hands.

At age four and above, introduce flossing to your kid to help remove dirt and grime that lurk between the teeth.

Make sure to also teach the after-cleaning procedures such as spitting, rinsing with anti-bacterial mouth wash, and rinsing with water when done brushing.

  • Visit dentist regularly

Getting a trained personal dentist for your kid can save you the energy of constantly searching for one whenever problems arise.

However, even the dentist at your nearest clinic can help recommend the best preventative measures for a tooth cavity.

Take your kid for regular check-ups and ask for screening and evaluation every time you visit. This way, the dentist can spot any cavity at its early stage of development and correct it before the effects outgrow their possibility of cure.

Remember also to ask for fluoride treatment for your kid since it helps strengthen the teeth.

Bottom Line

If the child is growing permanent molars, a sealant can help iron out the little grooves on the enamel that trap food particles and bacteria.

Dental visits are also an opportunity for you to talk to the dentist about what is happening in your child’s mouth and how to take care of the little one’s teeth. Visit us at Springvale Dental Clinic today!
